New Relic Treasure Hunt – DevOps Playground Edinburgh

At this month’s DevOps Playground Edinburgh, we invited along Robert Limbrey from New Relic – a cloud-based platform that gives developers, engineers, operations, and management a clear view of what’s happening in today’s complex software environment. It was an amazing Playground which revealed the true capability of New Relic and the use cases it can solve through its powerful application.

What is New Relic?

New Relic is an application performance monitoring tool. It allows you to understand your application performance, dependencies and bottlenecks by providing instrumentation and insights, diving deep into your infrastructure so you can make informed decisions. According to New Relic themselves, you can leverage the full power of the tool by using:

  • Application Process Monitoring (APM) — this feature delivers real-time and trending data about your web application’s performance. It can also record the level of satisfaction that your end users experience – super helpful for UX design!
  • Insights — New Relic gives you access to  a wide variety of methods to analyse and present custom, real-time data visualisations. This means you can watch your data streaming from one of our products, or from other applications — even without a New Relic agent installed!
  • Synthetics — this is a suite of automated tools that monitor your websites, critical business transactions, and API endpoints. These tools are also scriptable.
  • Browser — to help understand how users are interacting with your application or website, New Relic’s browser provides deep visibility and insight
  • Mobile — A MobileSession that grants you transparency into your Android and iOS application performance and troubleshoot crashes. You can also check your HTTP and other network performance for unexpected lag
  • Infrastructure — Infrastructure is an agent which provides flexible, dynamic server monitoring. From a physical datacenter to thousands of Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) or Microsoft Azure instances, it empowers modern operations teams to make intelligent decisions about complex systems, regardless of their size
  • Plugins — Publish your own plugin agents that collect selected metric data. Users can also install and view the collected data on their New Relic Plugins dashboards as a set of summary metrics, charts, and tables

The Playground

In this Playground, New Relic took us on a treasure hunt themed adventure. The object of the challenge was to search through the demo application and find the known issues, collecting points on your way.
